The Home secretary Alan Johnson has been defending his sacking of Professor David Nutt. Some scientists are reported to have backed the sacking but further resignations have been threatened.from the Government's Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs as it emerged that the Home secretary has put the body under review. Two drugs advisory panel members have already quit in protest.

The Home Secretary could easily have ignored the remarks by Professor Nutt ,the UK's chief drugs adviser, who questioned the reclassification of cannabis as a "class B" drug. Instead the Home Secretary opted for confrontation.

The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs was established under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 during Edward Heath's Conservative government. Colleagues of the sacked Chairman say they have "serious concerns" about his decision and whether they can continue.

This is of course not the first nor will it be the last spat between a politician and a government adviser. Houria Chahed Chentouf, 41, admitted two counts of possessing documents likely to be useful for a terrorist. Barbara Windsor claims that she is leaving because she wants to spend more time with her husband although her agent has said that she will not be retiring from show business completely.

Stuart Henderson, a former detective chief superintendent who headed the Lockerbie investigation has revealed that eight potential suspects were identified at the time of the original investigation but were never interviewed.

Although the Lockerbie investigation has never been formally closed there was little evidence until recently that it was stil active. For the victims' families, the news that the Scottish authorities are reassessing the evidence will be welcome although some are worried that the police investigation into the atrocity is being publicly freshened up in an attempt to thwart demands for a full public inquiry.More than two decades have passed since Britain's worst terrorist attack but the relatives of those who died in the Lockerbie bombing remain united by a single common goal: the truth.

The focus of the renewed investigation is a search for any new evidence which might point to the accomplices of Libyan Abdelbasset al-Megrahi, who was convicted in 2001 of the murder of 270 people and recently freed on compassionate grounds. Fresh forensic tests are to be carried out and 'several potential lines of inquiry' examined.

Christine Grahame MSP has criticised the move to renew the investigation into the Lockerbie bombing claiming it will prevent a public inquiry and stop new evidence being heard.

Iraq suffered its deadliest terrorist attack in more than two years when suicide bombers used two car bombs and killed at least 132 people in the centre of Baghdad. Reports indicate that another 500 were wounded when the bombs targeting government buildings went off. This was one of the deadliest attack in two years with the two car bombs exploding almost simultaneously. The attacks targeted the Justice ministry and a provincial government office near the heavily fortified Green Zone.

President Barack Obama condemned Sunday's "outrageous attacks" outside government offices in the Iraqi capital and said that they "reveal the hateful and destructive agenda of those who would deny the Iraqi people the future that they deserve. These bombings serve no purpose."

Iraq's Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki visited the site of the twin bomb atrocity in Baghdad and issued a statement blaming al Qaeda and Baathist supporters of the former president Saddam Hussein. Three days of mourning have been declared.

Iran condemned the terrorist attacks and the Cairo-based Arab League (AL) strongly condemned the bombings. The atacks were also condemned by The European Union.

Meanwhile a top Iraqi General warned that Iraq risks increased instability if elections slated for January are delayed. Legislation key to the polls remains stalled. Iraqi leaders are preparing to meet to try to end the deadlock as concern grows that the January polls may have to be delayed.
Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is pushing for a resolution, arguing that a delay to polls would harm the legitimacy of Iraq's parliament and government.

The BNP leader Nick Griffin's appearance on Question Time caused great controversy and was preceded by protests outside the BBC with scenes of crowds bursting through police lines in protest.
The row over Nick Griffin's appearance on Question Time also echoes the controversy that greeted the first invitation for Jean-Marie Le Pen to debate on French TV. the big debate is whether this apearance will have helped the BNP or if it will have shown them up for being a racist fascist party.

Windows 7 upgrading issues

Microsoft Windows 7 looks likely to be well recieved by business. A study by Information Technology Intelligence Corp. and Sunbelt Software found around 76 percent of those surveyed
plan to deploy the new OS, with 30 percent deploying before mid-2010. This would be an adoption rate similar to the introduction of Windows 2000. 78 percent of those who tested a beta copy of Windows 7 seem to have had a good or excellent experience with it. So it could be that Microsoft is finally putting it's Vista troubles behind it.

The Windows 7 open beta process has given a good buzz for the new
operating system and there does not seem to be too much left for Microsoft to say about the new OS.
Windows 7 biggest competitor is Windows XP, because of its satisfied customers, and companies who cannot afford the cost of upgrading or replacemnt. Time will tell how many companies are actually able to follow through on their Windows 7 intentions.

Hardware that is fairly old - older than four years - but which runs XP well should probably still work with Windows 7. You should think about looking at Microsoft's Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor website .
There you can download the free Upgrade Advisor application, which runs tests on your existing hardware and tels you which components may be lacking. The advisor won't tell you though if all your peripherals -printers, scanners, webcams etc - will work properly with Windows 7 Fortnately the operating system does a better job than previous versions of Windows in automatically recognising and installing drivers for a wide range of peripherals.

It's best to make a list of your peripherals and stop by the websites of the manufacturers to see if Windows 7 drivers are already available then download them and have them handy during the installation of Windows 7. If they're not then a Google search may show if others have had problems with the same equipment under Windows 7.

One thing to note is that although Windows 7 may automatically install a driver for your device the Microsoft-supplied driver might not have all of the features of the driver you're using with Vista or XP. Some duplexing HP printers get installed under Windows 7 but fail to print on both sides of the paper, regardless of driver settings.

Software compatibility is a key issue also of course and Microsoft's Upgrade Advisor can help with this also. Most common Windows applications work with Windows 7 and give no problems. Some utility software packages and antivirus utilities may cause more problems.

New Windows XP Mode.
If you have older legacy applications that run fine under Windows XP, but for some reason will not under Windows 7, Microsoft Windows 7 has a new Windows XP Mode but this is available for free only for the Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions of Windows 7.

It creates a completely separate Windows XP operating system running inside of Windows 7. Once XP Mode is running, you can switch to it like switching to any other open application. All applications that ran under XP will also work under XP Mode. But a cautionary note - it will only work with Intel processors that support virtualization technology. Fortunately, most recent ones do.

Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7

For XP users who wish to upgrade, and are confident their hardware is up to the job there are three options. If you have enough disc space you can leave XP where it is and install Windows 7 in a newly created partition or if you are feeling brave you could first upgrade from XP to Vista then upgrade to Windows 7.

The third option? Perform a ‘clean’ install, wipe the hard drive, install Windows 7 then reinstall all programs and data files.

For most people method three is best and Windows 7 makes it fairly easy by offering to backup all your essential data (documents, media etc), critical settings (email and web accounts and so on) and Windows preferences.
There is a utility program on the Windows 7 installation disc called Easy Transfer that copies everything to an external hard disc or USB drive. Once that’s done and after you’ve installed Windows 7 run Easy Transfer again and import all of your data and settings from the drive. There’s an easy tutorial on the Microsoft TechNet website . Easy Transfer cannot move your programs though– you’ll still have to reinstall those from the original discs and downloads.

Easy Transfer can save hard work but can’t help if the upgrade goes badly wrong and there’s no easy route back to XP, so you should plan for this possibility. Make a disc image or ‘clone’ of your XP hard drive so if the worst does happen you can justinstall the cloned drive and revert to XP. To do that you’ll need a second hard drive of similar or greater capacity and a disc-cloning program such as Acronis True Image.

Alternatively make a separate backup of all of your documents, photographs, media files, address book and anything else you value on to an external hard drive. Also copy any program installation files.

LapLink PC Mover Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant is a utility designed to move not just files and settings but also programs from XP to Windows 7, without using an external storage device but its not clear yet how reliable this is.

On Thursday night, BNP leader Nick Griffin will appear on the BBC's current affairs programme “Question Time” after the BBC ignored calls to ban him. The corporation's governing body had met in emergency session to consider the issue of the BNP appearance.

Anti-fascist protesters rallied outside the BBC's west London studios on Thursday ahead of a white-supremacist party leader's appearance.

The BNP is now saying that its “security team” will be with Griffin inside the BBC studio.

BBC WALES will not be inviting BNP representatives on to political panel programmes because it judges that the far-right party has insufficient support.

I can understand the disgust that millions of BBC TV viewers will feel at the inclusion of the British National Party leader but millions of Britons will nevettheless watch tonight as the nation's public broadcaster gives Griffen his first full TV airing.

Ben Bradshaw, the Culture Secretary, says he does not believe that Nick Griffin should appear on Question Time tonight but Gordon Brown said tonight's appearance by Nick Griffin would be a good opportunity to expose what the BNP are really like and expose his "unacceptable" views.

Hamas week long truce follows rockets

Hamas appears to be re-positioning itself in response to the recently announced Israeli ceasefire. A senior Hamas official has stated that Hamas will shortly declare a cease-fire. Hamas is claiming that it will give Israel one week to withdraw from Gaza.

In Syria Hamas's exiled leader Khaled Mashaal is due to make "an important" announcement on Sunday afternoon which will address Israel's unilateral cease-fire declaration.

The move comes as Hamas militants in Gaza fired rockets into southern Israel on Sunday and continued to resist the unilateral cease-fire announced by Israel. The rocket firing risks restarting the violence that has lasted three weeks. Palestinian sources claim that more than 1,000 people have been killed. More bodies were being pulled from the rubble as the ceasefire took hold. 13 Israelis have died in the violence.

Israeli security sources have indicated that the military operation may not necessarily be over and that the Hamas response would be critical in deciding how things developed.

Israeli aircraft responded to the rockets on Sderot by destroying the rocket squad.

Hamas have said repeatedly that any truce will depend on Israel pulling out of Gaza.

The Israeli comes without a full solution to the problem of arms smuggling into Gaza.

Israel appears to have calculated that it's unilateral ceasefire in the days running up to President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration on Tuesday would leave Hamas in a no win position politically.

Hamas seized control of Gaza in June 2007 in a violent struggle and this triggered an Israeli blockade. However the longer term violence stems from Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands and provocations such as the creation of settlements in occupied territories.

UN Gaza resolution fails to halt violence

Despite the passing by the UN security Council of a carefully drafted resolution calling for a ceasefire the violence in Gaza is continuing with both the Israelis and Hamas rejecting the ceasefire calls and each side seemingly entrenched in their irreconcilable views. Civilians in Gaza will of course pay the heaviest price for this failure to heed the UN resolution but then it seems that neither side really is considering the suffering of the ordinary Palestinians at the moment.

Hamas would appear to be calculating that despite the heavy losses that they have suffered they have more to gain from being seen to continue to resist the Israeli war machine. their calculation. no doubt is that in the longer term the deaths of Palestinian civilians strengthens them politically and will bring them more recruits and more sympathy in the Arab and wider Muslim world. As an organisation they have little interest in an accommodation with the Israeli state and the present conflict is simply a reflection of their view of the necessary state of affairs between Palestinians and Israel.

The Isrealis see little to gain from a ceasfire because they are clearly calculating that any actions to prevent Hamas rebuilding and rearming will be ineffective. They see Hamas as a snake on their doorstep and having got the smnake by the neck they are not about to let it go alive and risk having it turn around and bite them. Isreali's still appear to believe that a military solution is possible in this conflict and that this short term assault on Hamas will bring them longer term gains. They fail to take into account the likelihood that the present actions will simply encourage Palestinian unity to coalesce around a violent reaction to Israel rather than around a peaceful compromise.

We should not be surprised by this however for the Israeli mind set is to see themselves as victims and to fail to see the horror that they are causing for others. The Jewish state has turned in some respects into a mirror of that nemesis of the Jews in the 20th century - fascism. If not in the way they manage their own affairs then at least in terms of the way they treat their neighbours. They show no regard for the rights of their neighbours, they steal their land and they coral them into what are effectively ghettos where they shell and bomb them.

The present action although understandable in some ways also reminds one of the action taken by the Nazis against the Warsaw ghetto.

Van Hollen, clearly sensitive to potential accusations of protectionism added that any package would be aimed at “generating American jobs,” not triggering a “trade war.”

If there ever was an unfortunate coincidence of of a name and a job it must be Mr Bean a deputy Governor at the Bank of England. With the pound falling to near record lows against world currencies both Mr Charlie Bean and the other Bank of England Deputy Governor Sir John Gieve have been commenting on the state of regulation of the financial markets and the Banks in particular.

It appears that the Bank of England and the FSA were possibly not entirely asleep at the wheel as the current financial tsunami broke over the world and the UK.

According to Sir John Gieve in an interview with Robert Peston the Bank had been aware of concerns about rising debt levels but failed to act on this because of concerns that action would be criticsed as countering wealth creation. So they were not entirerly asleep at the wheel then. Merely dozing.

Now, rather late in the day, he and his fellow deputy governor are calling for additional instruments to control the banks and lending. Unfortunately they appear to be making these calls long after the horse has bolted.

The problem we face at the moment clearly is not putting the brakes on excessive lending. It is keeping a reasonable flow of lending running at the same time as allowing overall debt levels to fall. Sure there is a need for the future to have controls over excessive and risky borrowing but one can't help having the feeling that, like First World War generals, those in charge at the Bank of England are continually fighting the last war rather than developing tools to win the present one.

UK nuclear weapons handed to private US firm

The United Kingdom apppears to have effectively abandoned control of it's Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston following a sale by BNFL to a US firm. Aldermaston has a key role in the production and maintenance of the British Nuclear deterrent Trident warheads. In effect then Britain has privatised its nuclear weapons production and maintenance and handed it over to US owned provate interests.

The UK government is predictably downplaying the implications of the move and claiming that control still rests with the UK government. This begs the question though as to who has the say over the selectin and vetting of staff at the establishment. Presumably this will now rest with the provate companies involved.

More Strictly Come Dancing Phone grief

TV viewer voting shows have been plagued by problems in the last year or so and the BBC flagship program Strictly Come Dancing seems to be unable to shake of problems with it's own voting. Not only did the voting system result in an unexpected three couples in the final show but thousands of viewers have now been complaining that they were unable to cast votes for some of the couples in the final voting stage.

Holby City actor Tom Chambers and his dance partner won the final vote and there was no doubt that their final show dance was a masterpiece of performance. But it is not good when a program which is meant to draw viewers in and make them feel engaged simply leaves them feeling frustrated and angry.

TV shows really must get their act together on the viewer voting arrangements. If viewers are left feeling that their votes are ignored, miscounted or that they are prevented from voting for certain contestants then they will rapidly turn away from these currently popular TV formats.

US care makers hold out begging bowl

Times are desperate for US car makers General Motors and Chrysler. It seems they are suggesting that they may barely survive a month or two if they are not given a major bail out by the US taxpayer. The chief execs of the two major US companies are looking for a bail out of around $34 Billion to stop the impending collapse of the US car industry. With car sales in the US having fallen by around 37% in the last month things are looking really grim for all the US carmakers. So grim in fact that there have been reports that the Chief execs have said that they will work for $1 a year of they get the hand out. Of course it wont really be $1 because they will have some other perks to keep their income up but it does show how desperate they are.

Perhaps if the US carmakers had upgraded their technology and focused on fuel efficiency then consumers would be keen to update their models even in hard economic times. But who wants to trade up for another gas guzzler when money is short.

BBC Star exposes himself

What is it with BBC Stars these days? They just seem to be falling all over themselves to create trouble for the BBC. The latest star to cause the BBC problems is John Barrowman who starred in the Dr Who spin of Torchwood. The Times reports that Barrowman was on a radio 1 show which was also being recorded by webcam when the presenter encouraged him to get out his "fruit and nuts". It appears that Barrowman duly obliged.

The BBC could really do without this kind of thing as it comes hard on the heels of the Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand affair which lead to thousands and thousands of complaints to the BBC about their harassment of the actor Andrew Sachs on air. That affair resulted in resignations and some serious questions being asked about stand rads at the BBC. You would think that in that climate the BBC would have cautioned all it's staff to play it a little safer at least for the time being. Will the BBC and it's stars never learn?
